We will learn a routine inspired by old movies in which Chorus girls kick their legs in unison to a vintage jazz tune. You may watch old Hollywood films and those as the Great Gatsby, fancy dressingup in vintage fashion, get fascinated every time paying a visit to Art Deco landmark buildings as Peace Hotel. You identify yourself to the Golden Swing Era. Do you have some favorite swing dance songs but didn’t know the swing band that played it? Did you ever wonder, who the heck are Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet, Slim & Slam, and Cats & the Fiddle anyway?! Maybe you know almost every tune of Ella Fitzgerald but do you know she wanted to become a dancer initially instead of singer and she was indeed a good swing dancer?
In cooperation with the French Consulate and the “Fête de la Musique”(Summer Solstice Music Festival) celebration, Deco Rhythm will be hosting a Saturday afternoon Video dance party at JZ On Stage with a 1920s dress theme. We will be playing videos that you can dance to from different eras of swing dance jazz. You will be able to see iconic stars, remarkable bands, famous dance performances, and a few interesting videos showcasing swing dance that you may never have any idea of their existence. All of this on one of the most powerful high fidelity sound systems in Shanghai. You can dance, you can watch, but just about the only thing you can’t do is be bored.
The afternoon will take place in three sections:
o Hot Jazz and early swing
o Big Band Era
o Modern Swing Dance Era
Be sure to come early so you don’t miss the section on Hot Jazz. Don’t leave early or you might miss some of the best Modern Swing. However, definitely don’t forget to dress on your snappiest ;s vintage attire.

作为法国领事馆主办、上海市政府协办的年度“夏至音乐节”庆典系列活动之一，6月20日下午，“装饰节奏”舞蹈俱乐部将假座JZ音乐集团旗下的On Stage，举办一场1920年代着装摇摆乐主题舞会，为你献上视频影像集结音乐舞蹈的盛宴，一起欢度夏至日的到来。在沪上及国内音响设施最顶级高保真配置的场地On Stage，我们将以Video DJ的方式播放我们精心收集、编辑的各个摇摆舞爵士乐时期的视频音乐，包括最经典的乐队、最著名的舞蹈演员、珍贵的历史影像资料和有趣的摇摆舞桥段。你会笑、你会跳、你会禁不住摇摆，抵挡不住节奏的诱惑！

Laurie and Nathan will be teaching a one-day workshop that will focus on beginning Collegiate Shag for social dancing, which is done to mostly uptempo swing jazz music. This style of swing dancing is a wild and high energy street dance from the late 1920s in the United States. It is characterized by a playful, wacky, and comical style and is thought to have spread throughout the United States through young kids in colleges.

This class will focus on the double time shag basic (6 count) and some social dancing exercises that will help you understand how to lead and follow. While the dance is often taught as a series of 6-count patterns, this class will try to focus on the lead-follow dynamic of the dance and expand to the single time (4 count) and tripple time (8 count) basics.

Nathan是一名在上海居住了快2年的摇摆舞者，从开始学习摇摆舞至今已经有8年了。在搬来上海以前，他在洛杉矶和很多专业的舞蹈老师们学习摇摆舞。 自2012年起他开始热衷于跳沙格舞并很快发现这是他最喜爱的摇摆舞种类。他参加过美国和亚洲很多地方的摇摆舞活动和比赛，其中包括好莱坞，Frankie Manning95周年，新奥尔良，香港，台北，奥斯丁和芝加哥等等的摇摆舞活动。
Nathan is a new member of the Shanghai swing dancing community having been here for almost 2 years. He has been dancing swing for about 8 years now having learned from many professional dance teachers in Los Angeles before moving to Shanghai. He has been actively doing collegiate shag dancing since 2012, and found it to be his favorite flavor of swing dancing types. He has traveled to and competed in dance events throughout the United States and Asia. This includes Camp Hollywood, Frankie 95, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, Hong Kong Swing Festival, Taipei Lindy Festival, Austin Lindy Exchange, Chicago Lindy Exchange, and others.

Laurie has been dancing Lindy Hop for 11 years, and has been traveling and competing since 2006. Laurie has 5 years of experience teaching private and large group east coast and lindy hop lessons in the United States, as well as 6 years of experience as a professional music teacher. Laurie enjoys sharing her love for swing music and swing dance with everyone, and strives to make each class fun and engaging. Most recently, Laurie spent two weeks this past summer at Herrang Dance camp in Sweden, where she spent a lot of time dancing Shag. She and Nathan have been working on their shag dance together, and recently enjoyed teaching a Shag workshop in Beijing. They are very excited to help promote this energetic and fun dance-their goal is to get more people dancing Shag in China!

Key is a swing dancer originally from Hong Kong and currently living in Shanghai. She travelled to Korea in April to participate in Camp Swing It (), the largest swing dance event in Asia. Key is sharing some of her experiences at CSI and her thoughts on swing dancing.

I started learning swing dancing in Shanghai about half a year ago.

How did you find out about CSI?
那么你是怎么找到CSI这个活动呢？
I moved to Shanghai from Hong Kong a year ago, and about half a year ago, a friend took me to a swing dance event in Shanghai. I met some dancers there, who also became my swing dance teachers, and they told me that there is a big event in Korea with both classes and social dancing, and I registered for the event right away.
我是一年前从香港搬到上海来。半年前我的朋友带我去参加一个摇摆舞的活动，在那里认识了一些在上海跳摇摆舞的朋友，他们同时是教我跳摇摆舞的老师们。我听他们说在韩国有一个大型的摇摆舞活动，有舞会也有上课，我就马上去报名了。
Had you been to Korea before?
你之前去过韩国吗？
No, this was my first time in Korea, and also my first time attending an overseas dance event. I started learning swing dance not long ago, so I hadn’t thought about traveling abroad for a dance event, but my teachers said it’s good to see the advanced dancers in other countries, and also that these events are really fun. So I thought it’d be a good opportunity for me.
没有，这是我第一次去韩国，也是第一次参加国际性的摇摆舞活动。因为我刚学没多久，所以之前没想过出国跳舞，但我听老师们说我应该去体验国外舞者的水平，而且玩得很开心，我也想通过这个机会去体验国外的摇摆舞。
So what was your schedule like during this event?
那么在韩国那几天的安排大概是什么样子呢？
CSI 2015 class schedule. We are ready! 2015年CSI上课时间表。我们准备好了!
The camp was three days in total. The first day we arrived at the camp venue in the evening, and there was an open class at 9 pm, which was taught by great instructors. They taught some ‘basic’ steps, but actually they were not that easy. After the class, all the participants went to the welcome party, and we danced till 4 a.m. the next morning.
The second day we were supposed to have breakfast, but some of us missed it because we were still sleeping! The first dance class began at 10 am. The classes were divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, and I attended the intermediate level. The first class ended at 11 am, we had some lunch, then continued with more classes from 1 pm to 5 pm. So we were taking 5 hours of classes in one day! After the lessons were done, we went back to our rooms and rested a bit, had dinner, then went to the dance party at 7:30 pm. We kept dancing till 3 or 4 in the morning.

它是总共三天的活动。第一天晚上到达CSI的场地之后晚上九点钟有一个公开课，很优秀的老师们教了我们一些基础的舞步，不过实际上那些步子也没那么简单。上完课十点钟开始“欢迎晚会”，所有的人聚在舞场一起跳舞。那天我们跳到凌晨四点钟才回房间休息。
第 二天早上应该先吃早饭，但我们都还在睡觉所以没吃到！我们早上十点钟开始上课，课程是分初级、中级、和高级班，我是报了中级班。十一点上完课后吃午饭，然 后下午一点钟继续上课，一直上到五点钟，也就是一天里面五个小时都是上课！下午五点回房间休息一会，吃晚饭后晚上七点半去参加舞会，一直跳到凌晨三四点 钟。

Actually we didn’t stay in a hotel. We slept in the guest rooms inside the camp venue. We slept on Korean style ‘tatami’ floor, with four people in one room. I had three roommates from Beijing, two Beijing girls and an American girl.
其实我们住的不是酒店，我们就睡在活动中心里的一些客房。它们都是韩式的客房，睡在榻榻米地板上。我们是四个人住一个房间，我是和三个来自北京的女生在一起，两个北京人，一个美国人。

Was the food at the camp venue ok?

It was very good. I wasn’t expecting much, but I really enjoyed the Korean food at the camp venue.
很好，我没想到它们做得韩国菜那么好吃。
The food was unexpectedly delicious! Eat, drink and dance! 没想到我们能吃到这么好吃的。吃，喝，跳！
Was there Korean BBQ?
有韩国烤肉吗？
No, no BBQ, but they served a lot of different dishes, like Kimchi, salad, rice, beef soup, pork cutlet, etc. They were quite tasty.
没有烤肉，但它们有很多小菜，泡菜、色拉、红米饭、牛肉汤、炸猪排、等等。味道都很好。
Did you make any friends during the camp?
你在那边有没有交到一些朋友？
Definitely. There were 800 dancers attending CSI this year &# from within Korea and 200 from overseas, including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Europe, and U.S. I made new friends from various places around the world, including some from Malaysia – they were also relatively beginners like me – and also some Korean organizers and dancers.
有啊，这次参加CSI的人总共有800个摇摆舞者，600个是来自韩国国内的，200个是海外来的，包括香港、上海、北京、新加坡、马来西亚、泰国、欧洲、美国。我认识到了来自世界各地的新朋友，包括马来西亚过来的人，他们也是刚学摇摆舞没多久，还有一些韩国当地的组织者和其他韩国的舞者。

What are some of your most memorable moments from CSI?
你在CSI比较难以忘怀的是什么呢？
At CSI, I had a chance to take classes from world-class swing dance instructors. They are not only great dancers themselves, but are also good at teaching others, and their classes are relaxed and fun. After their classes, I was able to do some movements that I couldn’t learn well on my own. For example, my Swing Out was not very good, but when I took Peter Strom and Naomi Uyama’s class on the Swing Out, Naomi gave me some advice. What she taught me were minor adjustments, but it mad a big difference and now I feel better about my Swing Out. So I really benefited a lot from the classes.
Also I had some very memorable dances during the parties. One Korean lead had very good connection, so I felt like I don’t need to think about my steps, just follow his lead and the music, and I was able to follow some moves that I had never done before.
I also had a chance to dance with some of the instructors, like William Mauvais from France and Soochan Lee from Korea. Because they’re such advanced dancers, I felt uneasy about asking them to dance, but later I thought I should just forget about my level and just went ahead and asked them. The song I danced with Soochan Lee was a very fast one, so I thought I wouldn’t be able to keep up, but because he was such a good lead I was able to follow almost everything.
Pontus Persson was one of my favourite instructors. “Let your body and shoulder move first. You were just thinking about your foot steps!” Pontus Persson是我最欣赏的老师之一。老师说我的动作需要从我的身体和肩膀开始，不要想我的脚步。
第一个就是有机会上世界顶级的摇摆舞老师的课程。他们不单跳得好，教学能力也很高，而且上课时感觉很轻松。有些比较复杂的动作我以前自己学不好，但上了他们的课之后马上有改善了。比如说我的Swing Out一直做得不怎么好，但Peter Strom和Naomi Uyama教我们Swing Out的时候Naomi给了我一些指导，虽然她给我的建议是个小小的改变，但改了之后我的Swing Out比较到位了。所以我觉得在CSI上课收获还是很大的。
还有难以忘怀的是在舞会上和一个当地的lead跳舞，他引带舞伴的connection很好，所以我跟他跳舞不需要去想自己的舞步应该怎么样做，只要随着他的动作和音乐就好了，而且我跟他跳舞我就会了一些以前没跳过的舞步。
我在舞会上还跟法国的老师William Mauvais 和韩国的老师Soochan Lee跳了。因为他们的水平非常高，所以我一开始不好意思请他们跳舞，但后来觉得我不应该在意自己的水平够不够高，我就冲过去邀请他们了。我和Soochan Lee跳的是一首很快的舞曲，我刚开始害怕跳不来，但是因为他带得很好，所以基本上都跟得上了。
We all learned a lot from each great teacher. it was so much fun and fruitful! 我们从每一位老师学到了很多。又好玩又有收获！
What were some of the challenges during CSI?
那么你觉得在CSI当中有什么比较有挑战性的事情吗？
Physical endurance was definitely a challenge. There were three dance parties, and we were dancing almost non-stop from 8 or 9 pm to 3 or 4 am. That’s like 6 to 8 hours of continuous dancing, and I danced with 8 to 10 leads in 1 hour, so that’s quite exhausting. But once I’m on the dance floor I just wanted to keep dancing, and I also felt my dancing kept improving each night.
有挑战性的肯定是体力。因为我们有三个舞会，基本上都是从晚上八、九点钟到凌晨三、四点钟，也就是说六到八个小时不停地跳舞。一个小时当中可能会和八到十个lead跳舞，所以很快就会消耗体力。但是我到了舞场就是想一直不停地跳舞，而且这样我的舞蹈水平也提高了不少，每个晚上都能感觉到了自己有在进步。
After the party, all we wanted was to sleep on the mattress to get re-charged for the next day! 舞会归来就是要好好睡觉！
So why do you love swing dancing so much?
你那么喜欢摇摆舞的原因是什么呢？
I think the main thing I like about swing dancing is the spirit — I feel like it’s very freeing and relaxing, lets me enjoy the music and dancing with different friends. I can express myself through music and my dance steps, and there is no big pressure, just enjoy the process. This is what I really enjoy about swing.
我最喜欢摇摆舞的精神。我觉得摇摆舞可以让你很自由放松，享受音乐，享受和不同的朋友一起跳，通过音乐和舞步把自己的感觉跳出来，也没有什么很大的压力，可以享受整个过程，这个是我喜欢摇摆舞的最大的原因。
The best gift from swing dance. 笑容就是摇摆舞给我带来的最好的礼物。
Do you have any thoughts or plans about swing dancing from now on?
那么你对你自己的摇摆舞生活以后有什么想法吗？
I’m still a novice, so I want to practice the basic technique first, and also dance with different instructors and dancers, exchange ideas and work through any issues together. I also want to learn from the advanced dancers, and get some ideas about how to improve my own dancing, and eventually establish my own dance style. I feel that if you really enjoy the process of dancing, then you can express your own individual style through dancing. I think this is the spirit of swing dancing, and all other dances as well.
我还是一个初学者，所以我想先把一些基础功练好，还有尽量和不同的老师和舞者一起跳舞，和他们互相交流，有什么问题我们可以一起讨论，还有看不同的高手跳 舞，从他们也可以学到一些东西，看自己怎么能够改进，慢慢建立自己的舞蹈风格。我觉得只要你享受跳舞的过程，你跳出来的就是你特有的风格，我觉得这个就是 摇摆舞、还有所有舞蹈的一种精神。
