Truth be told, I never graduated from college, and this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today, I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.&br&&br&The first story is about connecting the dots.&br&&br&I dropped out of Reed College after the first six months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?&br&&br&It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife --- except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking, &We've got an do you want him?& They said, &Of course.& My biological mother found out later that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would go to college. This was the start in my life.&br&&br&And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.&br&&br&So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out okay. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked far more interesting.&br&&br&It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms. I returned coke bottles for the five cent deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:&br&&br&Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.&br&&br&None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the &Mac& would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on that calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards 10 years later.&br&&br&Again, you can't connect the
you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something --- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever --- because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well-worn path, and that will make all the difference.&br&&br&My second story is about love and loss.&br&&br&I was lucky --- I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz1 and I started Apple in my parents' garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a two billion dollar company with over 4000 employees. We'd just released our finest creation --- the Macintosh --- a year earlier, and I had just turned 30.And then I got fired.&br&&br&How can you get fired from a company you started?&br&&br&Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. And so at 30, I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.&br&&br&I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down --- that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me: I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.&br&&br&I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.&br&&br&During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the world's first computer-animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, and I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together&br&&br&I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometime life --- Sometimes life going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love.&br&&br&And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking --- and don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking --- don't settle&br&&br&My third story is about death&br&&br&When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: &If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right.& It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I've looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: &If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?& And whenever the answer has been &No& for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something&br&&br&Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything --- all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure --- these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart&br&&br&About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for &prepare to die.& It means to try and tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. I means to say your goodbyes。&br&&br&I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and, thankfully, I'm fine now.&br&&br&This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:&br&&br&No one wants to die.Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It's Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it's quite true.&br&&br&Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma --- which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.&br&&br&When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the &bibles& of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 60s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and Polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along. It was idealistic, overflowing with neat tools and great notions.&br&&br&Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: &Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.& It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I've always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.&br&&br&Stay Hungry. 有个概念上的误区影响了我好几年。&br&&br&从前我一直以为邮件是个正式的交流方式,只有组织好想法、写出完整段落才可以发邮件,就像写信一样。&br&&br&等我进入主要用邮件交流的环境里读书、工作,才明白邮件其实更像短信,最重要的功能是告知对方你的进度(managing expectations,即“管理对方的预期”)。越是依赖邮箱的环境,邮件就越像短信,需要即时、简洁,传达要求和任务完成情况,而文字并不用客气、漂亮。&br&&br&一开始没理解这个概念,犯了不少错。&br&&br&比如勤快干活却被误会:&br&&blockquote&早上老板邮件通知我写一份报告的初稿。我埋头就开始做,想下班前给老板发个提纲,请他提意见。我想,老板那么忙,我发邮件肯定得慎重,那就等提纲写好再发吧。&br&可是下午,老板走到我身边问,你一早上在做什么呢,查查邮箱,我布置任务给你了。&br&我连忙解释说他邮件刚发出我就看了,现在提纲已经快写完。&br&老板说,那你要回我邮件啊,不然我怎么知道你已经开始做了。今天下午我有会,没时间看提纲,你明天直接把初稿给我吧。&/blockquote&&br&再比如同时被不同的人布置很多任务,没有发邮件,结果耽误进度:&br&&blockquote&过去几天我一直在做老板 A 布置的任务,可有一天早上,老板 B 发邮件布置了新任务。我想,邮件里跟老板 B 肯定解释不清,而且显得我能力不足。反正我手头上的事最多再有半天就做完了,那时候我再回复老板 B 吧。&br&结果不巧,剩下那些 A 布置的活比我预期的要难,我花了一天才做完。&br&晚上,刚准备留下做老板 B 的活,就收到他的邮件,问我做的怎么样了。我急忙打电话向他解释了情况。他说,那你应该早点告诉我,我这个今晚就要。早知道你在做别的事,我就安排其他人了。&/blockquote&&br&上面两种情况都是我缺乏主动沟通,错以为发邮件会“打扰”到工作繁忙的老板或者显得我不会处理事情。其实,他们最想要的是我即时的回复,告知他们我是否能完成任务、预计何时能完成、需要哪些帮助。&br&&br&所以要说“拯救英文邮件”,那就必须得是下面这些短句。且只需要这些短句就够了,邮件里不需要 “Dear XYZ”,“Hi ABC”,“Regards” 这类同陌生人里邮件必要的寒暄客套。另外,在发件人可以看到收件人是否已读邮件的工作环境里,你也需要这样的简短回复,告知进度。&br&&br&如果你给人做事:&br&&ul&&li&Will do. 好的,我会去做。&br&&/li&&li&On it now! 我现在就开始做!&br&&/li&&li&Will send over a draft by the end of the day. 下班前会给您初稿。&br&&/li&&li&I'm having trouble accessing XYZ's site. data-original=&https://pic4.zhimg.com/50/5edcffb177_r.jpg&&&/figure&&br&这个东西从机器上方的挤出机接收塑料,连接三个臂,通过白色加热棒加热,融化塑料,辗转腾挪,实现最终打印。&br&效应器的基本组成是挤出头(连接中空的加热棒,图中右上白色)用于融塑料和送出塑料,风扇(装在效应器上最好,装不装看挤出头材质),限位开关(非常重要,在打印初始化时打印机会在圆盘上找几个点确定平面,这个限位开关给打印机一个平面的触感),剩下的就是支撑结构和各种螺丝螺帽和铜垫(如果是淘宝在专业店买材料会有,如果纯自组装推荐买M3*70和M3*25的螺丝,实际数量和大小需要依据实际情况)&br&各位最好是直接淘宝搜索,买成品零件或让店主给你打一个零件出来最快,因为3d打印机是不量产的,所以这些固件只能自己想办法,答主手机码字,自找材料的决定放在最后说,先普及打印机工作原理!&br&效应器成品&br&&figure&&img data-original=&https://pic3.zhimg.com/50/00c878dfededab57b93a4e_r.jpg&&&/figure&fffffffff!!&br&&br&5.组装以上&br&其实机械部分大体就是这几个主要的,接下来把挤出机,效应器,底盘,减震及热床(如果有这俩的话)固定在框架上就可以了!&br&一般来讲,不管是为了好看还是走线方便,cpu和显示屏这时候也是要装好的!我这一步省略了很多,诸如同步带,xyz限位开关,送料管,鱼眼杆,滑车,这些都没有讲,其实这一步还是很麻烦,而且肥肠肥肠重要的!由于我机器不在手,我决定后面简单手绘打印机工作流程的时候细讲~&br&另外,如果你是自己找的材料,一定要测量所有机械结构的长宽等参数!肥肠肥肠影响精度!!&br&&br&&br&收,接下来我们看线路部分:&br&&br&&br&1.arduino(cpu)&br&&figure&&img data-original=&https://pic2.zhimg.com/50/74d022cf7c073af78c82a_r.jpg&&&/figure&引用一下大神教程里的原话:&br&“刚刚一枚ramps1.4手焊完毕,材料成本35元,买成品的话是65元左右。&br&&br&ramps1.4和mega2560组装完毕,烧录Marlin固件完毕,连接lcdsd卡控制器模块测试正常。这年头3d打印机不能实现脱离上位机打印不叫打印机,所以一定要购买lcdsd卡控制器模块,62元一个。”&br&&br&&br&&br&解释一下,首先arduino是打印机必不可少的,如果你动手能力强,又刚好手边有焊锡丝和电焊工具,可以考虑自己做,但是小白的话必须要买!因为这玩意你一旦焊锡焊大一点挨上另外一坨就短路!哭都来不及!&br&然后解释一下这个“烧录marlin固件”。这一步是用电脑完成的。一个空白的cpu必须有操作系统才能运作,marlin固件对打印机来说就像windows对pc一样。一般marlin是用c语言编写的,推荐新手买一条龙淘宝有个很大的原因是这个,因为自组装的机器参数是根据自己实际情况来调整的,因此你下一个通用的marlin固件还不行,还需要打开源代码修改xyz和打印头参数才能烧录cpu,机器才能正常运作!这就徒增了很多步骤,因比推荐新手不要浪费时间(我为了看懂这玩意自学c,然后发现等我学通了机器都得生锈了)。&br&cpu上有usb,连接电脑,用来烧写程序和指挥打印。&br&还有个细节,有时候主板上有人会想加散热条,这玩意要小心点装,容易短路。&br&&br&经好心人提醒,这里添加一点东西,解释一下我前面说的cpu,其实叫做arduino:&br&arduino的硬件是类似cpu的主板,用来电路连接,软件则是一个开源的叫做arduini IDE的东西,当你在电脑上用它编写程序后,就可以上传到硬件中去(上面提到的烧录marlin固件),然后这个软件就会指挥打印机的电子机械部分运作啦~&br&&br&&br&&br& 2.液晶屏&br&这个没什么太多要解释的,找个合适的地方安装接线到主板就ok了,上图中有液晶屏接上主板的图。没记错的话,这玩意好像是有正负极的,注意就好。&br&至于功能,一般打印机的液晶屏会有一个旋钮,用来在打印机的菜单上调节一些参数,但是基本电脑连接cpu的usb后可以实现完全操作。有时候模型打印比较久,也可以拔掉电脑,但是需要有一个sd卡和插槽在打印机上,这时就可以用液晶屏来操作啦~&br&如图是我机器的屏:&br&&figure&&img data-original=&https://pic3.zhimg.com/50/68fa2738fede1273abbcd2_r.jpg&&&/figure&&br&&br&3.开关,电源&br&不多说,看名字就懂了。&br&&br&4.线路拼接&br&不要看线路部分我没写多少,这玩意可是花了我整整半天时间做的!其中各种风骚走线,限位开关接线说出来都是泪!由于3d打印机就算一条龙的接线也是卖家不知道哪里摸出来的,因此电线有很多地方要剪剪拼拼,自寻材料的话,肥肠不容易。&br&发几个图感受一下线路有多蛋疼:&br&&figure&&img data-original=&https://pic4.zhimg.com/50/f6fdbdc00_r.jpg&&&/figure&&br&扭铜线还蛮容易划伤手的,要注意!&br&&br&对了这里提一下,绑带在接线的时候帮助非常大!!神器!!&br&&br&接线部分的最后,说一下风扇和效应器以及步进电机,这些都包含在接线里。其中效应器上有一颗热敏电阻,连接cpu,时刻监视打印头的温度是否在220左右,如果你发现温度老是不对,要检查这玩意是不是掉了!!&br&&br&线路部分就讲这么多吧,各个部位大家有个脸熟了我们来看看打印机工作的流程~&br&&br&二,打印机工作流程(前面其实简单看看就行~看这里更清楚~)&br&这里只讲kossel三角洲的~&br&&br&1.电脑计算&br&&br&组装好你的打印机后,就要开始打印了!&br&烧写marlin到cpu前面已经提到,我用的打印软件叫做cura~&br&因为3d打印和手工制造不同,它的模型是一层一层打印出来的,大家网上看一下视频会有一个直观的感受,所以,电脑需要将储存的三维模型进行分层,计算出每一层打印头打印的路径,让打印头划线一样填充每一层。这个计算的过程就是cura完成的。&br&cura计算出路径以后,我们就可以选择打印速度,填充密度,裙边,支撑,温度,模型大小等参数啦~&br&这里解释一下:&br&填充密度:&br&原谅我画图渣渣。。上个图:&br&&figure&&img data-original=&https://pic1.zhimg.com/50/f4e86f376fdacae6322c32_r.jpg&&&/figure&&br&假设我们使用3d打印做了一个三角体,那么用菜刀把它切开内部就是这样横竖交叉的线,这就是一般采用的模型内部填充方法了。&br&填充这个参数非常影响打印的时间,比打印速度更影响,可以说它对时间的影响仅次于模型大小。这是因为一般打印体都是有上百层的,所以中间划线越密,时间越长。&br&&br&裙边是帮助模型粘紧底盘的参数,就是在打印紧贴底盘第一层时在模型边缘多打几层帮助稳定。&br&&br&支撑,很难把握的一个参数,因为许多,尤其是人物模型有很多部分是悬空的,目前的打印机没办法无视重力悬空打印,所以解决办法就是从第一层开始打印能够支撑但是很脆弱的柱子来支撑悬空部分,待模型完成剪掉即可~&br&支撑有两种方法,就不多讲了~&br&其他参数暂时想不出来有什么不好理解的,略过~&br&另外,cura适合很多种打印机用,进入程序时需要设置机器类型和基本参数(例如打印盘大小和高度)。&br&放一张cura的样子:&br&&figure&&img data-original=&https://pic3.zhimg.com/50/841a3a1fd0e60e03104fd8_r.jpg&&&/figure&&br&2.cpu指挥机器动起来!&br&&br&插上usb,设完软件,就要点击开始了!&br&首先,cpu命令打印头加热,当温度达到220度左右时,打印头开始自动归位,然后下降去找底盘。当打印头接触到底盘时,它会在底盘上不同位置有规律地点二十来个点,来记录底盘的水平程度,点完以后,打印头回到中心调整角度,然后咻!!&br&开始打印了!&br&&br&打印头如何知道自己归位了,如何知道碰到底盘了呢?还记得之前说的效应器的限位开关吗?&br&这个东西一碰它就断电,随即给电脑一个信号说我断电了!这时打印头就知道自己碰到底盘了!&br&&br&大概就是这样:&figure&&img data-original=&https://pic2.zhimg.com/50/f3e659dadadb_r.jpg&&&/figure&&br&原谅我的渣画工。。总之当打印头接触收到一个轻微压力时,螺丝会戳限位开关一下,给cpu一个信号。三个柱子顶上也有这样的开关,用来让打印头回到原点。&br&&br&各位注意一下这里我好像有地方画错了,但是懒得改了。。哈哈&br&&br&3.辗转腾挪&br&&br&先说步进电机和滑轮。顾名思义,步进电机的特定角度的转动记为一个单位,这样编程就有了可量化的数值。四方形的打印机大家肯定好理解,xyz轴各一个电机平着走就行了呗~那我们这三臂的呢?&br&&br&再来看个我这逼死处女座的草图!&br&&figure&&img
