在美國租車自助旅遊，是最方便的旅行方式，但是對於在美國租車規定不熟悉的國人，出發前就必須先做好功課，事先了解美國租車的規定及程序。在出發前，最好先上要租的車，以節省時間及金錢。美國的租車公司依車的大小及排氣量將車分為以下各等級：
經濟型(Economy)：這類的車大約可容納五人，並放一大件及兩小件行李。車型如現代(Hyundai)
Accent，分兩門或四門。
小型車(Compact)：這類的車大約可容納五人，並放一大件及四小件行李。車型如
Ford Focus ，分兩門或四門。
中型車(Mid-Size)：這類的車大約可容納五人，並放一大件及四小件行李。車型如
Pontiac Grand AM ，四門。
大型車(Full-Size)：這類的車大約可容納五人，並放兩大件及四小件行李。車型如
Ford Taurus ，四門。
中型運動型多功能車(Mid-Size SUV)：這類的車大約可容納五人，並放一大件及五小件行李。車型如

國際駕照美國及加拿大租車，首先您必要有合格的國際駕照(International
Driver's License)。但是在美國很多州(見下表)並不承認國際駕照，還需要國際駕照持有人同時持有本國駕照才能夠租到車，並在該州境內合法開車。所以出國時，除了國際駕照之外，還必須隨身攜帶您的本國駕照。　
加拿大境內
1.加國駕照之核發係屬各省權責，而各省對國際駕照之認定不盡相同。安大略省規定持國際駕照者可以駕車，遊客以三個月為限，移民以兩個月為限。&
2.持本國駕照者，仍須通過考試方能取得該省駕照。&
華盛頓特區，維吉尼亞州、西維吉尼亞州、夏威夷州、佛羅里達州
持國際駕照可在該特區或州內駕車。&
須具「居民」身分、通過筆試及視力測驗，方能申請該州駕照。&
密蘇里州、關島、堪薩斯州、科羅拉多州、內部拉斯加州、南達科他州、北達科他州
需同時出示國際及國內駕照。
華盛頓州、羅德島州、伊利諾州、密西根州、威斯康辛州、印第安那州
麻薩諸塞州
持我國內及國際駕照者均需重考筆試及路試，通過方可取得麻州駕照。&
德克薩斯州
18-75歲間之我國觀光客可於德州使用國際駕照一年。
康乃狄克州、賓夕法尼亞州
1.需同時出示國際及國內駕照。
2.不能申請直接換照。&
3.移民及留學生得在入境後卅天內使用我國際駕照駕車，期滿須申考當地駕照。&
佛蒙特州、俄亥俄州

1. 持照人如有社會安全號碼可申請換領該州駕照。

3.在猶他州全時工作或居留者不得持用國際駕照。

2.不能申請直接換照。&
3.移民及留學生得在入境後卅天內使用我國際駕照駕車，期滿須申考當地駕照。&
密西西比州
1.換發當地駕照僅需考筆試。&
2.留學生倘提供在學證明，可持國際駕照駕車。
1. 持國際駕照、國內駕照及B2觀光簽証，可在該州駕車，但以卅天為限。
2.須具「居民」身分、護照、社會安全號碼、通過筆試、路試及視力測驗，方能申請該州駕照。&
不能申請直接換照，且凡在該州停留三十天以上須另考該州駕照。
備註：因美國國內反恐的等相關因素，所以有效期限及相關規定會經常變更。
有很多人問，在美國租車到底要不要買保險，因為保險費有時比租車費用還貴。買保險這種問題，見仁見智，有保險開車就會安心許多，如果沒有買保險或是買的保險不足，需要用到保險理賠時，金額往往會高出想像。買保險最重要的是不要重複購買，以免浪費保費。以下是美國最常見的租車險：
碰撞險〈collision
damage waiver又稱Loss Damage Waiver〉簡寫是 L.D.W. 或 C.D.W，主要保租來的車的損毀或失竊(車身碰撞險)。但是並不包含第三者損毀(第一方為租車者，第二方為租車公司，第三方為車禍時另一方駕駛)或對方的損失(對方駕駛所造成的損失)。有些租車公司又稱這項保險為Physical Damage Waiver，簡稱
通常從國外來的旅客都須要投保延長險〈Extended
Protection〉，這種保險有包括醫療及責任險，是保護您自己在被對方求償〈claims〉時所用(保對方)，同時也確保您自己及乘客在對方於事故發生後逃跑或對方沒保險時所造成的醫療費用。該項保險有時又稱為
Supplemental Liability Insurance，主要是付或付超過個人或公司保險所保的理賠金額上限，如果你個人或公司沒有保險，你可以買這項保險。
還有一種叫個人險〈Personal
Protection〉又稱為 Personal Accident Insurance 又稱Personal Effects Insurance，簡寫是 P.A.I. 或
P.E.I.。主要保租來的車所造成己方駕駛及乘客的傷亡(保醫療費用及車內的財物損失)，為一次性付款(One-time payment)。
因為租車保險在美國沒有專門的法令明文規定，所以每間租車公司的保險名稱及內容多有不同，所以在租車前最好先問清楚保險及理賠的內容。
如果您有自己的汽車保險(有美國保險公司在美國所發的保單，也就是
policy，非美國公司在當地所發的保單不適用)，你通常都不用再買保險(限於自小客車，載貨卡車不在內，但您必須先打電話問自己的汽車保險公司，自己的保單內有沒有擔保租來的車)。如果您有信用金卡或白金卡，並刷卡租車，信用卡公司通常優有提供租車及旅遊險(同樣的，你還是必須打電話詢問信用卡公司，看看您的卡有沒有這項免費的服務)。出國時，如果您買了旅遊平安險，甚至於使用全民健保海外給付(請詢問健保局)等。你就可以考慮少買一些租車保險，但是最基本的保汽車的碰撞險一定要購買。在美國租車，一定要有保險，不可為了省一筆小錢而誤了自己。美國境內所買的租車險僅美國境內(或包含加拿大境內)有效，並不包含墨西哥境內。
租車公司的年齡限制通常是 18 歲或 25 歲，大部分的公司年齡限制都是 25 歲。有些地區的租車公司會租給未滿 25
歲的客人，但是要多付錢才能租的到。如果大型連鎖租車公司不租給你，你可以試試當地的小型租車公司，這方面的資料可看當地的電話簿。取車時
租車公司的取車地點通常有機場附近或非機場兩種，機場附近取車比較方便，所以費率會較非機場的為高些。機場附近的租車公司通常都提供免費專車接送顧客到達租車公司處辦理租車手續。旅客只要在，到達租車公司後，選擇保險，刷卡後，就可以辦理取車。
取車時，一般租車公司都會註明油箱內的汽油多寡，汽車是否有任何的損壞(內部及外表)。並且要求顧客做一個巡視(Walk-through)，以確定是否有任何的新傷。如果顧客發現汽車有任何的損傷，應記錄在租車合約中，並要求租車公司的人員認證(簽字)，以免還車時需要賠償該項損失。
還車時，如果油箱內的油沒有按照規定加滿，租車公司會多收加油費，所以請將油箱內的油加到符合合約上的要求(看合約上的規定)。
