During the meeting at the annual convention, the Colonies Zone representatives selected Natalie Ferdinand Taylor as their new Zone Chair. Natalie is an aquatics director at the University of Maryland, and was a director for the USMS National Long Course Championship in 2014.
Natalie has the following message to our Colonies Zone:
Hello Colonies Zones Members,
I would like to thank everyone who voted for me as your new Zone Chair at the recently concluded USAS Convention.
With the help of the fantastic volunteers we have on our Zone, I hope to continue moving our Zone forward.
For those who do not know me, here is a little bit about my background. I swam competitively for about 25 years, including at the varsity level, and joined the USMS community when I began coaching the Terrapin Masters team at the University of Maryland in 2006. I am a level 2 certified USMS coach and enjoy helping swimmers achieve their goals in any way I can. Swimming has allowed me to travel to some fantastic destinations around the globe, such as Brazil and Australia and it has also contributed to some of my longest lasting friendships. Along with Carrie Tupper, I co-hosted the 2014 Marriott U.S Masters Swimming Summer National Championship, and the smiles I saw throughout the meet, made all the hard work that our group put in extremely worth it.
The more I learn about USMS and the dedicated volunteers who make this organization succeed, the more I want to contribute in my own little way. I hope you will all join me in continuing to advocate for the Colonies Zone and our LMSCs.

During the annual USMS convention in October, Niagara LMSC's Dan Kornblatt from Binghamton University Masters Swimming received our zone's Dorothy Donnelly Service Award. Dan was a founding member of the BUMS almost three decades ago. After almost fourteen coaches later, Dan took over head coaching duties and led the team to consecutive Zone Championships, and to membership of over 100 swimmers. Congratulations.
A coaching certification class opportunity is being offered in the Colonies Zone this November. First, a Level 1 and 2 class will be held at the Holiday Inn Stadium in Philadelphia on August 29. A level 3 Coaching Certification Class will be held at the Courtyard South - Navy Yard in Philadelphia. Registration can be made online from the USMS web site.
The Asphalt Green Masters One Mile Ocean Swim & Colonies Zone Open Water Championships at Point Lookout Town Beach, NY was the best of the past 18 years it has been contested. The weather was perfect and the surf was fun and made for a fast incoming tidal push for the measured mile. The 115 athletes who finished was the largest since the race was a USMS National Championship in 2001. Brian Krut, from the Open Water Swim Team was first overall and Rachel Ripley, Asphalt Green Masters, was the first female (7th overall). Congratulations.
About 120 swimmers attended the 2015 Colonies Zone LCM Championship / 8th Terrapin Cup July 10-12 at the University of Maryland. As both meets had not been held in a few years, this was a most welcome addition to the 2015 LCM calendar.
The meet was held in a 3-day format, offering the 1500 on Friday and two short sessions on Saturday and Sunday morning, and featured all of the 400 and 800 relays. This was a great opportunity to swim a fast meet in a fast pool (host of last year's Summer Nationals) and for those heading to nationals, to do some fine tuning. Cecelia McCloskey of 1776 swam to 4 new USMS records in the W 65-69 age group.
